Who’s That Talking: The Problem with Point of View
with Jessica Barksdale Inclán.
While writers often think that plot and character are their main issues, what can truly derail a story is inconsistent or confusing point-of-view (POV). While many experimental texts do have a varied or changing POV, most of us are really trying to keep the voices in our story consistent and follow-able. Through generative writing exercises, participants will learn how to identify, track and change their POV, using various published works to facilitate discussion. The session will then review problematic POV, such as is used in memoir or historical context, as well as how to convey the passionate voice without alienating the reader.

What Good is Research? with Janée J Baugher.
How can creative writers both conduct and incorporate research into their work? What’s the difference between primary and secondary research, and how can writers approach both types to better draft poems, stories, and essays? In this session, we’ll address these questions and more, for uniting research, exposition, and imagination is a great recipe for creating poetry, fiction, and nonfiction of literary quality. Additionally, we’ll look at excerpts of writing which have researched elements, in order to understand how writers seamlessly weave research into their writing.

Indigenous Ekphrastic Technique: Bending Boundaries, Breaking Barriers
with Emily Woodworth.
Ekphrastic writing is the translation of visual art into poetic form. This presentation delves deeply into ekphrasis and demonstrates ways writers of both prose and poetry can leverage this technique to fuel creativity. We’ll first trouble traditional ekphrastic definitions, examining sources from Homer to Baldwin, then analyze exciting new experiments in ekphrasis by Indigenous writers. Attendees will come away with an expanded notion of what can inspire ekphrastic writing and see more possibilities for using this technique to fuel brand new pieces or breathe new life into existing work. Whether attendees are Indigenous or not, they’ll see how these techniques can benefit their own writing by disrupting their usual language rhythms and adding depth to their conceits.

Pillars of Great Nonfiction Writing
with Sneed B Collard III.
Even experienced writers often don’t understand what makes the best nonfiction books and articles so compelling. Writers, readers, and teachers alike still tend to think of nonfiction as “facts”, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Great nonfiction is about telling great stories, and the success of a writer depends on his/her ability to pick those stories out of any subject. Using published examples and brief exercises, this session breaks down key fundamental elements that make nonfiction truly sizzle.
