Welcome Mike Dillon and his new collection of prose and poetry

We welcome Mike Dillon, author of “Departures: Poetry and Prose on the Removal of Bainbridge Island’s Japanese Americans After Pearl Harbor”

“Departures” opens on the eve of Pearl Harbor and ends at the present-day Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial.

“I’m surprised at how many alert, well-educated people know little or nothing about this shameful episode in American history,” Dillon said. “Given the current political environment, I felt it was important to revisit the matter and offer fresh angles on what happened.”

Dillon, who comes from a newspaper family, was recognized by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association with its Master Editor/Publisher award in 2013. When he was growing up on Bainbridge, Walt and Milly Woodward, owners of the Bainbridge Review during World War II, were iconic role models. The Woodwards, nearly alone among West Coast newspaper publishers, spoke out against the imprisonment of their Japanese American neighbors, and played a large role ensuring those who had been sent away would be welcomed home after the War.

In 2013 Mike Dillon retired as publisher at Pacific Publishing Co., which publishes a group of community newspapers in Seattle. He is a fourth-generation Bainbridge Islander who lives in Indianola, near Kingston, in Kitsap County.

Dillon’s journalism has won numerous awards, and his freelance articles and essays appear in publications in this country and abroad. He is the author of five previous books of poetry and three books of haiku, and has been twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize for his poetry. His haiku have received international recognition, and have been translated into several languages. Several of his haiku were included in “Haiku in English: The First Hundred Years,” from W.W. Norton.
