Back to top1/24/2022: American Library Association 2022 Youth Media Awards!
The best known of the American Library Association 2022 Youth Media Awards are The John Newbery Medal and The Caldecott Medal.
There are so many others, too! Here are the big ones, and some of our favorites.... links to the announcements of all of the 2022 awards are below.
Newbery Medal
The John Newbery Medal, which honors the "most outstanding contribution to children's literature," was awarded to Donna Barba Higuera's "The Last Cuentista."
Fun fact: Higuera’s book is the 100th winner of the Newbery!
"The Last Cuentista” is also the 2022 Pura Belpré Children’s Author Award winner. Pura Belpré Awards honoring Latinx writers and illustrators whose children's and young adult books best portray, affirm and celebrate the Latino cultural experience.
Caldecott Medal
The Randolph Caldecott Medal, given to the "most distinguished American picture book for children, was awarded to "Watercress," an autobiographical story that tracks a first-generation girl rediscovering her Chinese heritage by foraging for the titular leafy green in Ohio by Andrea Wang.
Author Andrea Wang said she was "screaming with joy" at the news, and that illustrator Jason Chin's "incredible, luminous, exquisite art not only brought the story to life but also brought lost family back to me."
Coretta Scott King Book Award
The award named for King, the civil rights activist and wife of Martin Luther King Jr., is awarded to Black authors and illustrators whose works "demonstrate an appreciation of African-American culture and universal human values."
This year, the author and illustrator awards went to the same book: "Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre," written by Carole Boston Weatherford and illustrated by Floyd Cooper. The nonfiction book introduces young readers to the prosperous Black community of Greenwood in Oklahoma and its destruction in 1921 at the hands of a White mob.
William C. Morris Award for a debut book published by a first-time author writing for teens
Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in literature written for young adults
“Firekeeper’s Daughter,” written by Angeline Boulley, is the 2022 Morris Award winner and the 2022 Printz Award winner.
Daunis, who's part Ojibwe, defers attending the University of Michigan to care for her mother and reluctantly becomes involved in the investigation of a series of drug-related deaths.
A groundbreaking YA thriller about a Native teen who must root out the corruption in her community.
